Viagra: Changing People’s Perception of Sexual Dysfunction
Erectile dysfunction and other sexual dysfunctions used to be a malady that no one would want to be identified with. And why, not when it used to be a social and medical stigma that could mean the end of a virile man’s reputation among the ladies and even among his peers.
However, the approval by the United States Food and Drug Authority of Viagra or Sildenafil in 1998 was a breakthrough that made erectile dysfunction no longer a closet health condition. The breakthrough was responsible for bringing out into the open the types of sexual dysfunctions that can affect men of all ages, sizes and shapes.
A lot of men with symptoms of erectile dysfunction, and who did not know what they were suffering from, came out in the open and had the chance to be checked by experts in that field. And because of that, a lot of men got the necessary help they needed to get them through this darkest period in their lives in terms of psychological treatment and medical treatment through an erectile dysfunction drug called Viagra. Gone were the days when impotence was a shame. In fact, Viagra even became a status symbol even among virile, young men who do not even need Viagra to get on and complete the sexual act. This has led to the use of Viagra as an entertainment pill or recreational drug which, while being discouraged through the requirement for prescription, is still prevalent. Viagra was first in the scene so it has always been a status symbol and the benchmark for erectile dysfunction drugs. Other erectile dysfunction drugs like Levitra and Cialis followed suit but Viagra is still a step ahead of its competitors, thanks to the effective marketing and brand name recall implemented by Pfizer, its manufacturer. A total of 27 million Viagra pills have been prescribed to patients in Britain alone. Over 30 million men in various countries have been given Viagra prescriptions. However, millions more have benefited from the effects of Viagra through the backdoors or illegal channels. Thousands of Viagra is being prescribed by doctors to patients with erectile dysfunction on a daily basis and the figure is expected to increase as more men with sexual dysfunctions come out in the open to seek for treatment. Some agree that Viagra has patched up relationships that have gone sour due to sexual problems. However many also agree that it has also been responsible for the break up of many relationships because of the virility and promiscuousness it has brought to men who used to be faithful to their partners. |
