Viagra might be much more than just a quick fix for Diabetics.
A new study measuring the effects of long-term Viagra therapy in type 2 diabetics shows that extended use may improve erections even when a single dose does not.
Diabetes is a physical disorder in which the insulin that normally regulates the body's blood sugar levels becomes less effective. As a result, the amount of insulin in the body is not enough to restore the balance, causing hyperglycaemia, an excess of blood sugar. Hyperglycaemia in turn is dangerous for a number of cells, not the least the endothelial cells which line the body's entire circulatory system and work as shock absorbers. When those cells lose their ability to withstand the blood flow turbulence some of the blood's forward momentum is lost, meaning that the blood does not reach quite as far as it should. Cold hands, numb feet and erectile dysfunction follow.
EDGuider Blog: Top 3 methods of improving erections naturally without Viagra While a single dose of Viagra works for some men with diabetes type 2, older gentlemen with more advanced stages of both diabetes and impotence often find that it is not enough. This new study by the University of Western Ontario in Canada shows that long-term use of Viagra can improve endothelial cells and thereby improve erectile function. Researchers conducted a ten week long double-blind clinical trial in which type 2 diabetics with long-term erectile dysfunction. The 24 men were divided into two groups, both with an average age of 59 and no statistically significant difference in body mass index, duration of disease or duration of impotence. Smoking habits, alcohol consumption, hypertension and hyperlipidemia were also similar across both groups and most of the patients had previously unsuccessfully tried using a PDE5 inhibitor, such as Viagra, Cialis or Levitra.
Half of the patients were given 50mg of Viagra on a daily basis throughout the ten week trial. The other half of the patients worked as a control group and was issued placebo pills, designed by Pfizer, the makers of Viagra, to look and feel just like the famous little blue pill. Patients were graded before and after the ten week trial using the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF).

Although the overall scores of the Viagra group increased, the researchers found the greatest change in response to questions of erection frequency and staying-power. That is exciting news for all those diabetic men who feel that the impotence pills on the market have failed them, and hopefully new and bigger trials will be conducted soon to verify the safety and efficacy of long-term use.
