Is Viagra misused?

Unless you have been sleeping all these past years, you are surely aware that Viagra , introduced specifically for treating erection disorders for men have quite changed the way men look at their sex lives. While men, nearly of all ages have benefited by the goodness of Viagra, there are some usage patterns seen in this drug, which perhaps are opening up various areas of concern.

While any responsible pharmaceutical company would invent and market their products with the honest and sincere intention of bringing health and relief to the end users for any type of ailment, they have no intention for the drug to be misused or abused by them. To know what I am talking about, let me first explain why Viagra, is used in the first place. It is used to treat a particular disease condition called erectile dysfunction, also known as ED or impotence. ED, a sub set of male sexual disorder, is a condition when a man is incapable of getting or sustaining an erection, an essential ingredient to have sexual intercourse. ED is not necessarily an age-related disorder as even younger men can become its victim. While men can have ED due to temporary psychological disturbances like stress, anxiety, relationship problems, depression, etc sometimes this disorder can prolong and this is when medical intervention is required. Even some chronic disease conditions like diabetes etc can also result in ED.

Pfizer, the pharmaceutical giant had all the good intentions of making Viagra for the treatment of such erectile disorders and sure enough it did create a sensation within a short time because of its efficacy. Sildenafil Citrate, the main ingredient of Viagra, was able to increase the blood flow to the penile area and helped men of all ages with their erectile dysfunction problems. It became a boon to older men who were unable to perform in bed not as well as their younger counterparts as well as younger men who suffered this disorder for reasons of their own.

One of the first instances of the misuse of Viagra, was perhaps with the underground world of illicit porn movies where the men had to perform the near-impossible task of performing their non-stop sexual act to satiate the appetite of the women featured in such movies. While the movie makers are able to complete and compete with such movies in the market, which understandably has a huge demand all over the world, is there a wrong signal about Viagra which is percolating down to men? Even when you consider the world outside the porn film world, middle aged men who are normal in every respect are perhaps getting the wrong signal with such drugs 'prolonging' their erection capacity. While the woman can have multiple orgasms and can keep up that mode for several hours, men need a breather between two sexual acts, as the male hormone testosterone takes its own biological time to work at it again. Such men are having the ED drug to keep up with the demand of their women. The question is, is this what Viagra, was originally made for?

Today even younger men have looked at the potential of such drugs which help them to retain the erection for a longer period of time and they can get into the act, so long as the drug effect remains within the system. Thus Viagra becomes a handy tool for these otherwise healthy men too. These are issues which need to be looked into. And if doctors are prescribing Viagra to otherwise healthy men, simply to extend his sexual stamina and a few hours of increased sexual enjoyment, then perhaps the goodness of the drug is getting lost somewhere. If the end user is wanting to have Viagra as a recreational performance improving therapy, then there should not be any problem, so long as he can manage to recover from the side effects of continued use effectively.
