Pharmaceutical Company Boehringer Stops Flibanserin, Female Viagra

The Germany Pharmaceutical manufacturer Boehringer has decided to put an end to its development of the female counterpart to Viagra, flibanserin. They have been testing the product for over a year and have convinced several health authorities that it works, except for the US ones. They failed to persuade the FDA that the medication actually helps women fight sexual dysfunction.

The FDA panel ruled against the "pink Viagra" due to lack of benefits that outnumber the risk in this new drug. It does not show enough evidence that it actually helps women overcome their lack of desire for sex, and there are too many risks involved with flibanserin.

Flibanserin started out as an antidepressant, but later showed positive results in increasing women's sex drive. Viagra started out in a similar fashion. It was originally developed for treating heart conditions, but gave men an uncommon side effect, erections. From this point, the famous little blue pill would become one of the world's most popular medications.

The decision to stop flibanserin was not easy

Boehringer invested allot of time and money into testing, trials and development of what they thought would be the next breakthrough in sexual dysfunction. The decision to halt their research and development was a very hard one for the companies managing directors.  Convincing the US health authorities is much harder than anticipated and getting approval is very complicated.

Although they still believe in their product, they will focus their efforts and attention on other medications they are currently developing.
