Seeking Not So Horny Women
Wanted: Women who have not any sexual desire at all in the last 6 months or more. If this is you, and you are older than 18 with no recognized reason for a low libido, then The Physicians Research Group in Indianapolis is looking for you.
Women with low or no sexual desire is a tougher nut to crack then the men’s issue. For men, it generally is a physical thing in which drugs like Viagra can assist with by simply supplying more blood flow to the genitals.
With women however, it’s more of a treatment for the brain that they require. HSDD (Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder ) affects almost 20% of women in the United States. This makes this medical condition for more common than one may think.
Not only Indianapolis is looking for study subjects. Miami, St. Louis, Pittsburgh, phoenix, and Las Vegas are also seeking women for this type of study. More than 70 cities want up to 900 women (pre and post menopausal) to be part of a 24 week double blind, placebo controlled study to find out the effectiveness of the drug. Some women in the study will receive placebos, but will not know they are. The FDA’s rules on these studies say that the study subjects cannot be told the name of the drug, the manufacturer, or the potential side affects. The drug going up for the test was first tested in Europe for depression. In a multination study of over 1300 women last year with this antidepressant, more than 20% reported “satisfying sexual events” than the placebo taking women. The screening has been very specific, the researchers really need to find specific women or the study will not be beneficial to them or the study. Women need to have been in a relationship for at least a year, will need to talk to physicians about their condition, and fill out questionnaires to see if the qualify. These accepted women will be provided with a Palm Pilot to keep track of their sexual activity and how often they “want it”, or desire contact. The study, which is expected to wrap up this summer, will provide proper care for the study subjects. They will be well informed before signing up, their vitals will be tracked during 6 clinical visits. They will also be provided with ultrasound tests, pap smears, and mammograms. There will also be a small monetary compensation. So far no drug like Viagra has been approved by the FDA for women, even though it was approved a decade ago. This condition is relatively new to the public. Europe is currently selling the Intrinsa Testosterone Patch for women with low libidos. So, if you on occasion have a fantasy about George Clooney, or Brad Pitt, or maybe both, this study certainly is not for you. |
