A recent health alert issued by the United States Food and Drug Administration brought to public attention the additional risks faced by men using erectile dysfunction drugs like Viagra, Levitra or Cialis.  This risk is in the form of vision loss related to NAION or non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy.

While the direct cause and effect relationship between the use of erectile dysfunction drugs and NAION vision loss has not yet been identified, the FDA has met with the manufacturers of the three drugs regarding some changes in the labelling of their products.

As a result, Levitra has introduced some amendments in its product label and it now specifically mentions incidents of vision loss resulting from the use of erectile dysfunction medicines,

Studies indicate that NAION vision loss occurs not only among those who have taken in Levitra and other erectile dysfunction drugs but also among those who are not taking the said drugs.  It appears that people who are 50 years old or over who smoke and who have certain conditions like heart disease, diabetes, high cholesterol levels and eye problems have a higher risk of getting NAION-related vision loss.

In the absence of medical proof, doctors could not decide whether NAION vision loss is caused by the intake of PDE5 inhibitors (like Levitra, Viagra or Cialis), existing medical condition like diabetes or a combination of both factors.  In the meantime, those who have the said conditions should consult with their doctors before using Levitra or the other PDE5 inhibitors.

Every patient suffering from erectile dysfunction should consult with his doctor first before the intake of Levitra so the latter can recommend the proper dosage considering his health condition.  Levitra is basically a prescription drug and it can only be bought with a prescription whether you want to buy it personally, online or through the mail.

Aside from doctor consultation, patients should also read the patient information provided by the manufacturers of Levitra every time they need to take in the drug since there may be new or additional information indicated in the leaflets.

It should be noted that Levitra can cause a drop in the patient’s blood pressure and this may be dangerous when Levitra is taken in with other medicines.  Levitra should not be taken in by patients who are into nitrate medication or if they are using recreational drugs that are commonly called poppers. Nitrate medicines are commonly used by patients who have angina or heart problems.

It is also recommended that anyone who has liver or kidney problems, stomach ulcers, Peyronie’s disease and other serious conditions should consult with their doctors before taking in Levitra.
