Levitra Alternatives: Are They Safe?

Men who experience erectile dysfunction as a consequence of high blood pressure can resort to Levitra to help them achieve an erection.  Levitra or Vardenafil has been approved by the United States Food and Drug Authority as an erectile dysfunction treatment drug.

Levitra has worked positively for some hypertensive patients who required medication to help them achieve and maintain an erection.  However, those whose high blood pressure problem is beyond control (blood pressure is around170/110 mmHg or over) should not take Levitra or other erectile dysfunction drugs to avoid more serious problems. Those with heart problems, whether they have had a stroke, heart attack or are taking in medications for chest pain, should not take Levitra.  Nitrate drugs (which are usually contained in chest pain medications and recreational drugs) are not compatible with Levitra so make sure you inform your doctor that you are taking such medications or that you have such medication condition.

Those who cannot take in Levitra (or other erectile dysfunction drugs) for one reason or another should not lose hope though because there are alternative treatments to Levitra.

One Levitra alternative is Alprostadil, a drug (not a pill but a pellet) that is inserted into the penis tip.  This drug works by widening the blood vessels and allowing blood to fill such vessels to pave the way for penile erection.  Alprostadil and other drugs like papaverine and Phentolamine can also be injected into the penis to encourage erection.

However, using alternative erectile dysfunction medications that are applied to the penis through direct injection can result to longer erections or priapism which is a medical condition that requires emergency treatment.

Another Levitra alternative is a vacuum device which works like a penis pump.  The device is actually a cylinder where the penis is placed. By pumping on the cylinder, blood fills the blood vessels of the penis which results to an erection.  However, the patient needs to keep the penis engorged by putting a band and trapping the blood in the penis.

Unlike Levitra which is available only by prescription, these alternative treatments for erectile dysfunction can be bought even without a prescription.  However, there are certain risks that come with the use of treatments that are not sanctioned or prescribed by medical experts.

The herbal medication Yohimbe has been sued by some doctors along with other treatments for erectile dysfunction.  However, it can cause high blood pressure and increased heart rate so it is not safe for those with high blood pressure.

Despite the popularity of Levitra alternatives, there is as yet no alternative (whether in the form of herbs, supplements or methods) to the three erectile dysfunction drugs that have been approved by doctors.
