New ED Medication Staxyn Approved by the FDA

The FDA has given the green light to a new Erectile Dysfunction medication named Staxyn. It comes from the pharmaceutical company Bayer and is a new formula of their popular ED medication Levitra. Staxyn contains 10mg of Vardenafil HCI, the active ingredient in Levitra and is much different for the original pill.  The main difference between the two is the way it is taken. Staxyn is an orally orodispersible tablet, which means it dissolves without water on the tongue, disintegrating instantly.

Bayer has requested marketing rights, they should be able to offer Staxyn and get the final approval for it by the end of 2010. Bayer has also requested to market the product in Europe, which is also expected to be approved by the end of 2010. Once it reaches the US market this will be the first and only disintegrating orodispersible tablet available in the US. 

There are currently similar products available but only in countries such as India. Some common ones are Kamagrax which is a quick dissolving tablet that contains sildenafil, Kamagrax is not approved for sale in the US.

An estimated 150 million men suffer from Erectile Dysfunction worldwide and Staxyn is not the only new drug coming to the Market. In recent years there have been 2 more Impotence treatments trying to get approval to enter the market. Zoraxel and Avanafil are in the final stages of FDA approval. They are both independent new treatments, Avanafil is made by Vivus and Zoraxel is being developed by Rexahn Pharmaceuticals.
