Finasteride can grow hair back but might cause ED
One of the most popular male baldness medications "Propecia" has been eyed in a recent study on men who use this drug and start to experience erectile dysfunction. Propecia contains the active ingredient finasteride, and although it is proven to help grow hair back, finasteride may cause men to feel the unexpected symptoms of ED.
A series of 12 studies were performed on 4,000 men, the results were later posted in the archives of Dermatology. They were all given Propecia finasteride and a high percentage of men saw a real improvement in hair growth. However, 1 in 80 of these men reported having erectile dysfunction since they started the treatment with finasteride.
This side effect is not stopping men from taking Propecia: Although this side effect would be considered very crucial to most men, it is not stopping others from continuing to take it. Dr. Mella, who is one of the doctors who help organize the study said: "Most men who are taking this drug prefer to grow hair back and are not worried by the side effect of ED" The doctors go on to saying that the information gathered on these studies is not 100% accurate. The erectile dysfunction that some men experienced could have been caused by external factors during the procedures of the study. Millions of men experience hair loss but the number of men with erectile dysfunction is even larger. The complications with taking finasteride are the way it works and interacts with the dihydrotestosterone in the male scalp. Also known as DHT, this part of the scalp is also part of the male hormone. Men need to be aware of these critical side effects if they decide to take hair loss meds that contain finasteride in them. Make sure you read the labels and see if ED is marked as a side effect; also ask your doctor if you might experience ED from taking it.
