Vivus makers of AvanafilAvanafil is the New Player in The Erectile Dysfunction Field

Information is being slowly rolled out about a new player in the field of erectile dysfunction. We are still a long way from specifics like brand name and pricing, but what little we do know is encouraging.

Most popular erectile dysfunction pills work because the active ingredient is a PDE-5 inhibitor. That includes Viagra, Cialis and Levitra, the active ingredients of which are known as sildenafil, tadalafil and vardenafil respectively. Now pharmaceutical developer Vivus is conducting a series of trials on a brand new PDE-5 inhibitor: avanafil.

EDGuider News: Avanafil the competitor for Viagra almost has FDA approval

Most recently Vivus focused on the safety and efficacy of avanafil as a treatment for erectile dysfunction. In terms of efficacy, the study took into account both measurable improvements in erectile function and the patients' own evaluation of sexual and erectile satisfaction. The results place avanafil as a strong potential competitor on the erectile dysfunction market. In trials with 295 men, the effectiveness was rated "excellent" while side effects were minimal. Another study of 646 patients, all with a long history of erectile dysfunction, measured a statistically significant improvement in erectile function.

Avanafil can work in 15 minutes while the competitors take 30

Avanafil has a particular advantage over its potential competitors: the effects are demonstrable very quickly. The most conservative estimate promises increased erectile function within 30 minutes, but one study has demonstrated the drug's ability to lead to successful intercourse in 15 minutes or less.

In addition to being quick to take effect, avanafil leaves the blood stream quicker than most of its competitors, which may indicate that there will be fewer side effects. What those side effects may be is still uncertain, but, like users of similar drugs, avanafil trial users have reported some headache, flushing, back pain, and nasal congestion.

Avanafil also appears, at this early stage, to be better than most other impotence drugs at concentrating its activity on PDE-5. This is important because PDE-5 is a protein which interferes with the body's natural signals to relax the smooth muscle cells in the penis, thereby shutting off blood flow into the erectile tissue. The more effective a drug is in inhibiting PDE-5 , the more likely it is that a man will be able to achieve an erection.

As of yet, there is no trademarked name associated with avanafil. It is also uncertain under whose leadership the drug is likely to reach the consumer, but Vivus has a licensing and supply agreement with Mitsubishi Pharma. We will no doubt hear more about this new drug before it reaches the consumer.
