gm logoGM retirees take advantage of benefits until June 30th

Changes are coming for General Motors and Chrysler retirees. As of July 1st the benefits are changing and many retirees will loose some benefits they had before. These changes are due to the United Auto Workers and GM's restructure before submitting for bankruptcy protection. They are going to affect over a quarter million retirees of GM who used to have great medical benefits such as dental and even prescription drugs including Viagra, Cialis and Levitra.  This is all going to end after June 30th and many of them are rushing to see their dentists and getting there prescriptions filled before it all ends. This will not only effect GM retirees but keep in mind local Opthamologist's, Dentists and Doctors who treat thousands of these former GM workers

Dentists and physicians in the Detroit area are reporting allot of retirees coming in for dental work and general checkups, some of them are on a waiting list and if they get their appointment after Jun 30th they will not get the assistance from GM.

So what other benefits are GM and Chrysler retirees losing?
Here is a small chart of the benefits that will affect most retiress, it includes everything from prescription drugs to Emergency rooms expenses:

Prescription drug
Prices for co-payments will go up on retail drugs and generics as well up to $50
Erectile Dysfunction: ED medicine costs (Viagra, Cialis, Levitra) will no longer be covered, only approved cases
Catastrophic plan: Will not be supported anymore and the people on it will be given the option to switch plans
Dental program: Will no longer be offered at all
Vision program:
Will no longer be offered at all
Emergency room: The co-payment will go up to as much as $100

GM cutting benfits graph

Are these benefit cuts permanent or temporary?
All these cuts are NOT permanent and are all temporary for now, they are intended to cutt operating costs for GM and this will all change when the United Auto Workers takes the health trust over the following years. These benefit cuts do not just affect the retirees but local dentists and local doctors are going to take a loss as well loosing allot of business after July 1st
