Fast Acting Erectile Dysfunction Drug Avanafil to Come?

REVIVE. This is the name of a current study in progress testing an experimental ED drug called Avanafil. According to the study by Vivus, Avanafil’s manufacturer, this drug promises erections in 30 minutes or less with a working window of 6 hours or more.

This would be a viable option out there from sufferers of ED seeking a better experience from the 3 alternatives currently available. All ED drugs currently available target the enzyme PDE5, but unlike Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra, Avanafil appears to it more selectively, making it faster acting.

The study is in it’s first phase of four phase 3 trials. Two future studies will include men with ED that have diabetes, or have had prostate surgery. In this current phase, doses of 50, 100, or 200 milligrams or an inactive placebo were administered. These were the increases reported up from the start of the study: 27% of the men taking the placebo, 41% of the men taking 50 milligrams, 57% of the men taking 100 milligrams, and 57% of the men taking 200 milligrams.

LeRoy Jones, MD, associate professor of urology at the University of Texas Health Science Center, is the study investigator. Reports of side effects include headache, 7% of men taking Avanafil as opposed to 1.2% on the placebos. Other common side affects are flushing and nasal congestion, 4.6% on the drug as opposed to zero on the placebo and 2.3% on the drug as opposed to 1.2% on the placebo respectively.

The drug which is licensed from Mitsubishi Tanabe Pharma Corp. by Vivus Inc, expects Avanafil to be submitted for FDA approval in late 2010 or early 2011.
