Topically applied Vitaros ED cream by Apricus Biosciences

A topically applied erectile therapy cream is one step closer to reality. The commercial launch of Vitaros by Apricus Biosciences, the world’s first topically applied prescription drug for impotence, is scheduled for November of this year in Canada. The cream is also likely to reach European pharmacy shelves by the end of next year.

With annual erectile dysfunction drug sales at $4.9 billion globally and an aging population, translating into increasing demand, any newcomer on the impotence market has the chance of making it big. Vitaros in particular is a promising competitor, having two major innovations going for it: its topical application and its uncommon active ingredient.

One Drop of Vitaros will work in about 6 minutes!

With a single-use applicator a drop of Vitaros is placed on the tip of the penis. The active ingredient, PDE1, also known as alprostadil, is then absorbed through the skin through Vitaros’s high absorption molecules. The effects are measurable within six minutes. Because alprostadil works differently from the PDE5-inhibitors in most common impotence pills it could be a viable alternative for those who have tried other therapies with limited success. The topical application is also associated with fewer side-effects. Alprostadil is currently available as penile injections (Caverject) and urethral suppositories, but having the chemical absorbed through the skin is no doubt more pleasant.

EDGuider News: Vitaros ED Cream by Apricus Bio Works Within 5 Minutes

In its current formula, Vitaros has one major setback: it must be stored in a refrigerator. That makes sex less spontaneous and travel more difficult. Apricus is aware of this and is currently working on developing a new formula that can be stored in room temperature.

How much will Vitaros Cost?

As for the price, Vitaros is expected to enter the market at between $10 and $12 per dose, similar to competitors.

Whether Vitaros will be a major success, though, remains to be seen. Expert opinions diverge: “I think it can certainly enter the market as a fourth or fifth drug and grow sales significantly,” said Robert Wasserman, a Dawson James Securities stock analyst. Dr. Irwin Goldstein, a San Diego urologist who helped develop Viagra, on the other hand believes that Vitaros will enter the market as a niche treatment.

EDGuider Forum: Talk about Vitaros with others

Regardless of the experts, there is no denying that Apricus takes its entry onto the sexual dysfunctions market seriously. The company is already in phase three clinical testing of a new drug called Femprox to treat sexual arousal disorder in women.

Viagra & Levitra Innovate to compete with Generics.

Competition has long been fierce between the three leading erectile dysfunction pills, Viagra, Levitra and Cialis, but with the availability and affordability of generics, and the steadily approaching expiration of patents, the pressure is reaching new heights.

EDGuider News: Brand new chewable version of Viagra Jet GUM?

The American medical giant Pfizer, patent-holder for Viagra for yet another year, has responded to the pressure by coming out with a new soft and chewable erectile dysfunction pill called Viagra Jet. It was released in Mexico earlier this year, in response to surveys indicating that a large portion of Mexican men find the regular Viagra hard to swallow. There is currently only one chewable ED medication that comes from India, called "Chewable Kamagra". However it is not approved for sale in the US.

Bayer comes up with Melt in your mouth Levitra

Bayer, in turn, started selling a new melt-in-your-mouth (Levitra Orodispersible) version of their popular erectile dysfunction medicine, Levitra, in nine European countries. More than just an aid for men who have trouble swallowing tablets, it was aimed towards those who want to be discreet about their erectile difficulties. It even comes in a small black box. "It’s pocket-friendly, discreet and gives the product a playful edge over its competitors," said Thomas Proske, brand manager for Levitra. In other words, it gives Levitra a sleek and sexy brand image.

EDGuider News: Bayer also develops Staxyn which contains 10mg of Vardenafil HCI

Cialis has enough success with their 36 hour weekend pill

And brand image is important in this new world of erectile aids. Cialis was quite possibly first to realise this. Their famous "weekender" pill, for example, has been sold since 2009 and was designed and marketed as a more potent and long-lasting pill for couples sharing a romantic or sexy weekend together. It did so well for the Cialis brand that the company is steadily increasing its market share, despite not even trying to keep up with the innovations of Pfizer and Bayer.

With the market recently passing $5 billion annually, after a growth of nearly 7% last year, there is much to be gained for these companies by increasing their market share. There is, of course, also the motivation to grow the market. The erectile dysfunction market is far from living up to its full potential. In the UK alone 90% of the men who suffer from some form of erectile dysfunction are currently going untreated.

"A newer product, less expensive, and a new form of taking it – all that might convince more people to try it," said Dr. Joseph P. Alukal, director of reproductive health at New York University School of Medicine. While he did not want to refer to the new variations of well-known drugs as ‘gimmicks’, he did note that brand image is obviously going to be important in increasing both the market and the individual market shares.

Regardless of how many new variations of popular drugs these pharmaceutical giants put out, however, price is going to be an important factor. Generics are still significantly cheaper than brand drugs and some of them offer innovative solutions as well, such as soft tablets and liquid gels. Rumour has it that Bayer will be coping by putting out new variations on Levitra under a different, more competitively priced, brand name in the US. Whether the original little blue pill will come down in price after its patents expire in 2012 remains to be seen.

Let’s take a look into why commercials for ED meds are uncomfortable

Watching your favorite TV shows while your family is present can be the most relaxing part of your day. Enduring a commercial or two is not too bad, if it means you will get back to what you were watching within a few minutes. However, commercials that advertise erectile dysfunction medications Levitra, Cialis and Viagra are starting to cause a problem with parents and even republicans.

It is hard to explain what erectile dysfunction is to you children, and they should not be exposed to these commercials in the first place. This is how the “Parents Television Council” is reacting to these ads and they are pushing for some big changes. The PTC (Parents Television Council) is a media advocacy group that was made in order to prevent children for being exposed to commercials that involve violence, sex, foul language and in this case, erectile dysfunction ads.

EDGuider News: PTC Will work with Pharmaceutical Manufacturers to limit Commercials for ED

Creating a list where commercials for ED are displayed will be hard for the manufactures to control but they will have to abide to the PTC’s demands in order to prevent these commercials from reaching children. So far both parties have agreed on a schedule that will be provided to the PTC. This itinerary will show specific times and networks the commercials will be aired on, this way the PTC will have more control on when they will be aired.

We are going to use this blog post to see 3 different commercials that have been aired by the advertising companies of pharmaceutical manufactures, let’s see why they can cause some tension for parents.

Levitra Commercial:

Levitra commercials seem to more direct, explaining how Levitra is proven to help ED. They discuss what causes impotence and what side effects their medication can cause. These commercials seem to be the most explicit, they directly talk about ED. Ads run for Viagra and Cialis are much more subtle.

Cialis Commercial:

Cialis makes it clear that the effects of their product can last up to 36 hours; many men confuse this with a 36 hour erection, which is not the case. Although a little more discreet than the Levitra commercial, they still mention ED and sexual activity, which can raise questions if kids are watching.

Viagra Commercial:

Now this commercial does not even mention the word ED, Impotence or anything sexual. Viagra has been becoming much more discreet with their commercials. At the end of this video they only display the blue Viagra pill, which most men are familiar with. Since it does not have any explicit language or content, we have found it to be the best as far as discretion goes.

All these videos have been aired on broadcast television and cable TV. The PTC and pharmaceutical manufacturers have worked on an agreement to continue airing these ads on broadcast television, with prior notice provided to the PTC by a schedule. However cable TV will continue to air without a schedule. THE PTC’s next step will be cable, for now they have gone one step in the right direction.

Dietary Supplement Recalls on The Rise

Ever since Viagra was released back in 1998, dietary supplement manufacturers tried to mimic the effects, but the all-natural way. Medications that treat erectile dysfunction like Cialis, Levitra and the little blue pill, are prescription medications that can cause several side effects and interact with medications men are already taking. This is why it is very important men know what these meds contain and understand what the risks are. But what if men buy a natural supplement that they think contain only natural herbs to help sexual performance without knowing it contains a prescription chemical?

The main ingredients in ED medications are Tadalafil, Vardenafil and Sildenafil, which are all PDE5 inhibitors. Over the past year, all 3 of these compounds have been found in so called “dietary supplements” that are supposed to be 100% natural. All the dietary supplements that were issued recalls did not have any markings on their labels explaining they contained a prescription chemical that is used to treat Impotence; if it did they would not be able to categorize it as a dietary supplement.

The FDA, Health Canada and even Japanese health officials have recalled dozens of these products. The EDGuider news team has written countless articles on recalls issued by health officials, everything from coffee that boosts sex drive to pills that promise you hard erections. All the products that were recalled either contained Sildenafil, Tadalafil, Vardenafil or an analogue of them, some known as Acetildenafil, Sulfoaildenafil and Hydroxythiohomosildenafil.

Read about some of these recalls in the EDGuider News Section:

Sulfoaildenafil an analogue of Sildenafil Found in Vialipro: Another recall has been issued on a product that was advertised as a dietary supplement. The company Good Health Inc is doing a voluntary recall of the sexual performance supplement Vialipro

The Herbal Supplement Sexxx Drive Male Enhancement Recalled: This will be the second recall Canada sends out over the past 3 weeks on a male enhancement product that was labeled as an herbal supplement, but turned out to contain an analogue of Sildenafil, Viagra’s active ingredient

Magic Power Coffee Contains Silenafil Recall Issued: The FDA has issued a recall and is warning men who have purchased a coffee labeled as a dietary supplement named “Magic Power Coffee”. Men are urged to stay away and discontinue drinking it right away

Prolatis which was available at GNC has been recalled: This time the product Prolatis has been put on the recall list. Last week Prolatis issued a voluntary nationwide recall of their brand name product Prolatis. This comes just after they received a notice from the FDA saying they found sulfoaildenafil in the dietary supplement

How do I know if a dietary supplement I have or want to buy has a PDE5 inhibitor in it?

Do your research before you buy! If you already have a dietary supplement and are not sure if it contains a PDE5, you can check the FDA website for recall notices, or do a simple online search for the product name along with the word “recall” next to it. When recalls such as these are issued, health related websites will pick up on it and write informative articles about the recall with its lot numbers.

Some of these products were even sold in well-known nutrition stores such as GNC. Prolatis for example, was a product listed as a dietary supplement and was for sale on the shelves of GNC. If you have purchased a product such as Prolatis or any other product that has been recalled from a health nutrition store, it is recommend you stop using the product and return it to the retailer.

Complete List of every known treatment option for Erectile Dysfunction

You’ve probably been searching the internet looking for all the available treatment options known to man for treating erectile dysfunction, to see if there is one that might suit you. Let us start by saying, there are many available options. For some men, a simple Viagra pill will do the trick, but for others, injection therapy might be the only option. Those are just two of many we are going to list.

This post is based on our very popular EDGuider Forum thread called “Concise List with Scientific Data on Every Currently Available Treatment”. It started on April 28th 2009 and was put together by our forum members who suffer from various types of erectile dysfunction. They decided to put their heads together, compile a list and share success stories to confirm if the treatment option worked:

From the Forum:

“Every one of us on this forum wants to know what actually works to help ED, but unfortunately, ED information on the internet is often untrustworthy. So, it will be a lot of fun to put our heads together to make one concise list of absolutely every currently available method of improving erectile function that has scientific data proving it can help with ED (supported by studies done on humans or animals).

Obesity and Erectile Dysfunction

Obesity is one of the faster growing epidemic society is facing today. And everyday we learn something bad about obesity, and yet it is growing at an alarming rate. Well one thing more to chalk up to obesity, erectile dysfunction.

Not only is ED more common in obese men than men in good shape, their overall sexual health is at risk. Researchers at the Institut National de la Sante et de la Recherche Medicale, have found other startling issues in the obese population. More needs to be researched on this topic to know more, but the preliminary studies are eye opening.

Well over 12,000 men and women were studied by the French, ranging from normal weight to obese weight, ages 18 to 69, all living in France.

Here are some of the higher points that professors have documented:

Body Mass Index (BMI) had no bearing on sexual function in women

Sexually transmitted diseases were about the same between normal weight women and obese women

Obese women were much less likely to seek out advice about contraceptive methods than normal weight women

70% of obese women were less likely to use a contraceptive and 8 times less likely to use other means of less effective methods like pulling out.

Even though obese women were 30% less likely to have sexual intercourse, they were 4 times higher at unplanned pregnancies than normal weight women.

Meeting a partner on-line was 5 times greater for obese women than normal weight women, and that the partner they met would also be obese.

ARTICLE: Exercise Will Improve Erections in Overweight Men

The more prevalent outcome for the obese men:

The under the age of 30 obese men were more likely in the past five years to have contracted an STD (sexually transmitted disease)

Age 30 to 49 of the obese men in most cases did not use a condom

Sexual partners do not come easy for obese men as the were 70% less likely to have one

And obese men were two and a half times more likely to struggle with erectile dysfunction.

Obese men were more likely to use ED medications, most common ones are Cialis then Viagra

Researchers included in their conclusion that it would seem the obesity problem is a snowball effect.

Here is a great article from Health.com, it has an instructional video, we embedded the video on what overweight men can start doing right away to reverse their erectile dysfunction:

ARTICLE: How Overweight Men Can Reverse Erectile Dysfunction

They need to understand the relationships between obese people and their sexual relationships, and attitudes towards those relationships. This will further help us understand the health risk associated with obesity, and maybe a tool towards educating the population about obesity. This same population also needs to learn that talking to a health care provider about your sexual inadequacies is a good thing. This may take a generation or two, and doctors also need to be ready for this swing towards opening up.

Obese and younger men tend to watch more online porn:

This subject is still very taboo, but many men have been known to be addicted to online porn, mostly younger and obese men. The fear of rejection and insecurity can force many obese men down the road of online porn. Men who are obese and addicted to online porn, must consider on taking two major steps in eliminating their erectile dysfunction, exercise and breaking the habit of online porn.

Here is a good resource and guide on how to rid yourself of internet porn:

Apple Approves App That Fixes Erectile Dysfunction.

A new app for the iphone has been rumored to fix erectile dysfunction, but does it really work? Various websites have posted about it being a joke or prank. There are hundreds of apps on the market that claim to help you loose weight, burn fat, grow back your hair and even let you drink an ice cold beer, some for under 3 bucks. Let’s get realistic here, most of then are just for fun, so what’s up, literally, with this new Erectile Dysfunction app?

The eye opener here is that apple approved the app and listed it in the app store for $2.99. That’s a bargain, no more paying hundreds of dollars for Impotence medications or no more need for Viagra or the 36 hour Cialis when those long weekends are right around the corner. Can this actually be true or even come close to helping with Erectile Dysfunction?

How This App Works and what it does?

The App is called “Fire Up Your Sex Life” and it claims to work by just listing to audio waves! According to the apps instructions, men have to listen to an audio track for six minutes daily and after about a month your libido or sexual ability will be enhanced by over 80%. It claims to be as effective as Viagra! But before you going running to the app store, keep in mind you have to be 18 or older to buy it.

Here is a quote from the apps instructions:

“If you want to enhance your man power, please choose the wave audio and the play time, and then click the left button”

How does this app look?

Does It Work?
According to a report by Cnet over 500 men have already downloaded and tried “Fire up Your Sex Drive” and out of these five hundred men over 70 percent claim that it is very effective. Only time will tell if more men have success with the app or find it just to be another prank app.

To get the App check out the Apple App store here

Can Red Wine Help Erectile Dysfunction?

Researchers at Osaka University have isolated Resveratol (a polyphenol found in red wine) to determine whether it could be a treatment for erectile dysfunction.

At the moment, the test subjects are rats. These research rats have been induced with diabetes, which is a major cause of erectile dysfunction. These diabetic rats were then fed a powdered form of Resveratol for a four week period.

After the four week period, the rats were then stimulated to achieve erections, without the Resveratol treatment rats lost over 95% of their ability to achieve an erection with the diabetes. The ones that did take the Resveratol regained 80% of the blood flow back to there erogenous zones. The Resveratol helped the rats to produce more Nitrogen Monoxide which helps widen the blood vessels in the penis allowing more blood flow.

Testing the treatment on Men
The next step would be to start testing the treatment on humans. The Osaka researchers in Japan already admitted they knew the treatment was a bust on humans that simply drank the red wine with Resveratol, to get the proper quantity in the system by drinking red wine inhibited the erection factor, due to the alcohol intake, in men whether they had diabetes or not. And who said researchers had no sense of humor? They added women trying to keep up simply went to sleep.

Don’t put away the Viagra just yet however, these researchers are no where close to clinical stages yet, but there is hope on the horizon.

Older Men: More Sex = Less Erectile Dysfunction

The penis is like any other muscle in your body, if you don’t use it, you loose it. This goes for older men as well. If you do not exercise, you will loose muscle tone. The more you exercise, the better the definition is the muscle being exercised. To make muscle stronger, exercising it makes more blood flow to that muscle.

Listen to this; the major factor in ED (erectile dysfunction) is lack of blood flow to the penis. Most men do not know that this is the major function of Viagra or Cialis, helps blood flow to the penis. Like a muscle, exercise it and you will add blood flow.

Finnish researchers studied almost 1000 men for five years. The age of these men at the beginning of the study was 55 to 75. The research unveiled that the men who were having regular sex at the beginning of the study were much less likely to develop ED at the end of the study. These researchers are encouraging men to be sexually active into their golden years.

In Finland, the University of Tampere’s Dr. Koskimaki and colleagues reported these findings in the American Journal of Medicine.

The report said that men in this age group that had sex less than once a week had two times the risk of getting ED as the men who had sex at least once a week. And compared to the men who were having sex 3 or more times a week, the ones having sex less than once a week were 4 times more likely then the more than 3 times a week group.

Other factors can contribute to erectile dysfunction as well. Heart disease, age, medications, depression, and diabetes are among those factors. But even with those considerations the researchers report that sexual activity was still a major factor.

Want to keep getting up later in life seniors? Just like exercise, sexual activity will help keep it harder. Not only that, but other research shows that sexual activity also helps the heart. Imagine, helping the heart and your erections all in one!

Not only that, what would it do for you psychologically? All you here about in commercials these days is the need for Viagra when you get older. How would you like to be the senior in the park with your friends bragging about how you were doing it with your partner last night? Do you think that would be good for your morale? The answer is clear…

Believe it or not, rats and humans share similarities which mimic many relevant features of human erectile dysfunction. So researchers at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Case Western Reserve University have identified molecular changes in rats. These molecular changes accompany the onset of diabetes induced erectile dysfunction, which could gain insight and help indentify erectile dysfunction risk leading to potentially new drug discoveries into erectile dysfunction.

One of the most common problems induced in men with diabetes is erectile dysfunction. It is estimated that over 70% of men with diabetes suffer some for of erectile dysfunction, and in many cases actually develop more drug resistant forms of erectile dysfunction.

The corpora, which are the tissues that expand along the length of the penis by filling with blood during an erection, were studied in rats with diabetes. A proteomics approach to examine the relative abundance of proteins was used by Mark Chance and colleagues at two different stages of progression of the onset of diabetes. These two different stages were one week after the onset, and then at two months. They identified 57 different proteins in the tissues of the penis that had either decreased or increased during these controlled tests by comparing them to other age matched healthy rats.

Mechanics of erectile dysfunction
These proteins actually revealed some of the mechanics of erectile dysfunction. Collagen proteins provide the strength and hardness in an erection were not surprisingly down-regulated in the diabetes rats. The proteins that transport sex hormones were also down. Up regulated proteins were also revealed. The ones related to fat metabolism, which are responsible for the hardening and narrowing of blood vessels were among the up related ones as well as proteins involved in the death of cells (apoptosis).

The researches believe these insights into the proteins involved with erectile dysfunction could very well lead to the discovery of the medicines that may help diabetic men maintain a better quality of life with their partners. Ream more about these study at ScienceDaily.com
