A Whole New Use For Viagra
Viagra or Sildenafil may just be the next baby saver if clinical studies will show that it is an effective treatment for babies with Chronic Pulmonary Hypertension. Chronic pulmonary hypertension is a condition characterized by high pressure in the blood vessels resulting to reduced oxygen flow in the lungs and other organs of the body. Babies with this chronic disease are often faced with a life sentence but there might be a way to treat this illness using the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra.
Viagra has been approved by the United States Food and Drug Authority as treatment for erectile dysfunction. However, the drug was initially studied by its manufacturer Pfizer as a heart drug but it was rejected and was ultimately manufactured as an erectile dysfunction medication.
So how does Viagra work for patients with chronic pulmonary hypertension?
Viagra is known to improve the flow of blood to the penis resulting to a longer erection. This same principle is being eyed for chronic pulmonary hypertension whereby Viagra will increase the flow of blood and the delivery of oxygen to the different organs of the body.
The possible efficacy of Viagra for chronic pulmonary hypertension has been considered after a pediatric cardiologist used nitric oxide during one medical procedure involving a six-month old patient who has undergone and emergency surgery for total anomalous pulmonary venous return.
While the surgery was successful, it resulted to pulmonary hypertension which increased his lung’s blood pressure to six times more than the normal pressure. This condition can result to heart failure and even death. Moore however said the use of nitric oxide to remedy this condition is only a stop-gap measure which is impractical for long-term considering how expensive it is.
Studies however indicate that the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra can produce the same results shown by nitric oxide when it was given to Hartley and that is the reduction of the symptoms of pulmonary hypertension. There are indications that babies with Hartley’s medical condition would response well to Viagra but since the study is inhibited by the lack of available information about children with the same condition as Hartley.
Another patient with a congenital diaphragmatic hernia, one-tear old baby, was also given Viagra while receiving treatment. The baby has undergone surgery for his congenital hernia but it also resulted to pulmonary hypertension so he was given Viagra to reduce the pressure.
However, there are risks to using very high levels of Viagra on babies including a sudden drop in blood pressure as well as long-term effects which have note yet been studied.
While the medical world is hoping that Viagra will rise to the occasion as a possible long-term cure for pulmonary hypertension, it cannot be denied that it is presently a very valuable drug for the treatment of patients with erectile dysfunction.
