Can Levitra be the future cure for brain tumors?

Researchers recently came up with a startling revelation which might help people with brain tumors.  Studies by these researchers show that Levitra which is being produced by Schering-Plough and the other erectile dysfunction drug Viagra can possibly be used for the treatment of brain tumors. Researchers conducted some tests where Levitra and Viagra were used along with a chemotherapy drug and they found out that the erectile dysfunction drugs passed the barriers and successfully carried the chemotherapy drugs through the brain. Levitra and Viagra are known as PDE5 inhibitor drugs as they increase the flow of blood even to the small blood vessels.

The cancer-treating drug Adriamycin was injected to rats with brain tumors and they survived for 42 days. Laboratory studies show that Adriamycin is a very effective drug for brain tumor but it has proven to have little effect on both humans and animals because it is not able to cross the blood-brain barrier to cure tumor. The blood-brain barrier refers to the mechanism that protects the brain from harmful agents.  The same blood-brain barrier is possessed by the brain tumors which feed on nutrients using small vessels.

However, the survival period was extended by 11 days when the rats were also given the erectile dysfunction drugs Levitra and Viagra.  Scientists however said the use of Levitra or Vardenafil proved more effective. A Neurosurgeon who led the study, said the combined use of Adriamycin and Levitra resulted to a smaller tumor size and longer survival rate for the laboratory subjects. And since the erectile dysfunction drug passes the barrier without affecting the larger blood-brain barriers, there is a possibility that doctors can kill brain tumors through the combined used of chemotherapy drugs and Levitra without damaging brain tissues that are healthy.

Levitra is already helping thousands of patients suffering from symptoms of sexual dysfunction by increasing the flow of blood to the penis helping the patient achieve an erection up to the completion of the sexual act.  The drug has proven effective even among erectile dysfunction patients who are also suffering from other medical conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol. The success of the study on the use of Levitra as a possible cure for brain tumor may just elevate the drug not only as a sanity saver for those who have erectile dysfunction but also as a life saver for those who are suffering from brain tumors.
