Cialis And Priapism
Thoughts of using an erectile dysfunction drug like Cialis can lead to fears of a resulting medical condition like Priapism. Anyone who is taking or about to take Cialis or similar drugs should be wary of such side effects because it is a possibility.
Priapism is a medical condition characterized by a usually painful erection that lasts more than four hours even without sexual stimulation. This condition is a result of blood being trapped in the penis, thus resulting to an erection which can last for more than four hours.
Cialis or Tadalafil is a phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor which works by producing an erection through various chemical messengers in the penis such as the cyclic GMP. This messenger causes the thin layer of muscles located in the walls of the blood vessels to relax and widen which results to the widening of the blood vessels in the penis. With more blood coming in. the penis becomes erect.
The action of Cyclic GMP (which results to a rigid penis), is broken down by a chemical called phosphodiesterase type 5. The intake of Tadalafil (which acts as a phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor) discourages the breaking down of Cyclic GMP thus resulting to a longer erection period.
Unlike the other erectile dysfunction drugs, Cialis works up to 36 hours which means that with sexual stimulation, the patient is still capable of having another erection within that period. Here is where fear of Priapism comes in. What if the erection lasts for a longer period, say more than four hours?
Priapism should be treated immediately as it can cause permanent erectile dysfunction. Among those vulnerable to this medical condition are young men between 5 and 10 years old and older men between 20 to 50 years old.
While the intake of Cialis does not automatically mean you will get Priapism, medications for erectile dysfunction has been identified as a possible cause of Priapism. Other causes of the condition include sickle cell anemia, use of medications like Desyrel for depression or Thorazine for mental illness.
Priapism can also result from spider bites particularly the Black Widow, Carbon Monoxide poisoning, use of cocaine or marijuana, some forms of cancer and spinal cord trauma.
If you are taking in Cialis and prohibited drugs at the same time then you are at a higher risk of getting Priapism. If you experience an erection that lasts for a longer period then consult your doctor immediately to avoid permanent damage.
